Soumita Roy is a disciple of Padmabhushan Guru Prof. C.V. Chandrasekhar and Guru Smt. Thankamani Kutty . She is a  M.A. in Odissi from Rabindra Bharati University. She started taking lessons in Uday Shankar Style Of Dance from Smt. Amala Shankar and completed her Senior Advance Certificate Course from Smt. Tanusree Shankar.

Having received Senior Scholarship in Bharatanatyam from Ministry Of Human Resource Development,  Govt. Of India, she also attained First position in a Bharatanatyam competition organized by West Bengal State Music Academy. She had the honor of receiving National Nritya Shiromoni Award in 2014 by Cuttack Mahotsav.

She has performed in various festivals among which, "The Dover Lane Dance Festival",  Kal Ke Kalakar Sammelan, National Dance & Music Festival, Keonjhar, IIDF, India International Center, New Delhi, India Habitat Center, New Delhi, Swar Sadhna Samiti, Mumbai, Nrityangana Festival, Shilparamam, Hyderabad, Republic Day Celebrations, New Delhi, West Bengal State Music Academy, Youth Festivals are worth mentioning. She had performed in “MahisashurMardini” for Doordarshan Kendra, Kolkata.

Soumita also had the honor of visiting U.K. in 2007 and 2010 to attend the Cultural Exchange Program  sponsored by the British Council.

Soumita had the priviledge to perform Bharatanatyam at The Nehru Centre, London, United Kingdom in 2019.
